Project overview
Skilled at working in confined spaces and under complex conditions, Team IPS was excited to be appointed by National Grid Ventures as principal contractor on this specialist project.
With a strong reputation for delivering the highest levels of safety across all our services, National Grid Ventures trusted us to undertake intricate civil engineering works within a live high-voltage substation environment. We were tasked with retrofitting structural steelwork and rebuilding internal lift shaft walls, all under stringent fire protection and safety requirements.
Our scope of works
This was a highly specialised package of works, including:
- Technical design and engineering consultation
- Removal and reconstruction of existing non-compliant blockwork
- Bespoke scaffold system installation within a confined 2m x 2m lift shaft, 25m in height
- Re-fabrication and installation of steel Universal Beams and ancillary structural components
- Application of intumescent paint for long-lasting fire protection
- Construction of new blockwork panels between structural beams
- Management and oversight of sub-contractors
Overcoming challenges
Collaborating closely with National Grid Ventures and their previous suppliers, we thoroughly investigated existing structural conditions, reviewing and adjusting designs to determine the safest and most efficient solutions.
With pre-existing conditions to rectify, we refabricated steel components within the confined lift shaft and carried out extensive work to ensure that exacting fire performance criteria was met.
We took swift action to overcome every challenge we faced, completing the entire project within the agreed timescale, showcasing our ability to manage risks and deliver under pressure.
