"M Group appointed IPS Power to install, test and terminate high voltage cables at a National Grid substation. We were impressed from the outset when IPS deployed an extremely competent and experienced team to manage the project, including the work of other specialist contractors. Communication was excellent throughout the project and the team dealt with any issues that arose swiftly and professionally. We're looking forward to working with IPS again in the future and would highly recommend their services."

Project overview
When M Group were looking for a contractor to deliver a major infrastructure upgrade, they knew that Team IPS would bring the expertise and experience needed to complete the project to a high standard, safely and on time.

Working in a sensitive environment with highly technical requirements, we mobilised a specialist team to carry out complex cross-site, high voltage cable installation and testing works.

As principal contractor, we sourced several specialist sub-contractors, closely managing their outputs to ensure they met the exacting quality and safety standards we pride ourselves on.

Our scope of works
We delivered an end-to-end cable installation package, including:

  • Complex cable pulling designs and methodology
  • Acceptance testing of HV cables
  • Installation of 13kV and 33kV single-core circuits in a specialist trefoil arrangement
  • Partial and buried ducting installations, including cable spacing and tying
  • Installation of multicore pilot cables linking the substation to the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling sustainable reuse of energy source
  • Scaffold erection at termination structures
  • Termination and jointing of HV cables, bonding, earthing, and link boxes
  • HV commissioning via Very Low Frequency (VLF) testing
  • Sheath integrity before and after testing

Overcoming challenges
As with most major projects, we encountered some challenges along the way. Discovering pre-existing equipment damage, we enacted our strict safety protocols, pausing work until the issue could be resolved. Working hard to get things back on track, Team IPS liaised directly with the manufacturer before carrying out remedial work to minimise delays.
